Touring Kayak Paddle Sizing
There are many different theories about how to size a kayak paddle. This guide is meant to be just that—a guide. For some people the guide may be an exact fit, and for others it may only come close. As a general rule, we recommend the shortest paddle that will comfortably reach the water. Over an extended paddling time, a shorter paddle with a shorter lever arm between you and the water will reduce fatigue.
When sizing a kayak paddle, there are a few things to take into consideration. Your torso height, paddling style, width of your boat, and the height of your seat are all factors that will govern your choice. If possible, it is recommended to try various sizes before you buy. To measure your torso height, sit flat on a hard surface and measure from the surface to your nose. Use this number and the chart below to determine what length paddle you should have. |
